In light of recent censorship and controversy on Reddit, a new alternative to Reddit has came about at http://voat.co and has been gaining in popularity.
Recently, their hosting provider shut them down for allowing free speech, basically.
The reason they gave us when they notified us that they have cancelled our contract is “…we have received significant information that the content on your server includes political incorrect parts that are unacceptable for us.” and “Due to the fact that we cannot keep bond of trust to you as our customer…”.
Shortly thereafter, their paypal account was frozen because some people had posted ‘illegal pictures’ to the website.
Today, PayPal froze our donation money. As a cherry on top, the media wrote all kinds of negative things about Voat, cherry picking the content that serves their attacks best. What a happy week for us!
This is rather troubling. It is outrageous to threaten to shut down an entire website because of what some commenters have posted to it. The rational thing to do to someone who is posting things such as child pornography is to prosecute said individuals, not everybody on the site all at once.
Will it be possible in the future to even start new websites that allow free speech? I believe that many forces are working towards preventing such venues from even forming, under the umbrella that some individuals may use this freedom to post illegal or controversial things.
We may have to write off the internet as a place for free exchange in the near future if this trend continues.( This post has been viewed 43,610 times )
